Alternative Energy Stocks Enhance Your Portfolio

by M Taylor

Alternative energy stock portfolios are a smart addition to an investor’s portfolio. There is a lot of growth potential in these investments, making them a great choice for long term investments. The money you put into these stocks will further the goal of putting alternative energy sources into use.

It is predicted that by the year 2013, alternative energy will account for $13 billion of the energy sector. What does this tell us? That there is an enormous return on investment to be had. If you invest in an alternative energy start up, you might find that you have invested in the Google of alternative energy in a few years time. People are getting sick of the astronomical cost of petroleum based fuels - while this is not in and of itself a complete picture of the alternative energy market, it is a big enough factor to point out that there is money to be made here.

Just because of this, you should not run out there and buy up every share you can in the entire industry. There are some alternative energy companies which seem to be very solid investment choices, but as Sanjay Shrestha, an analyst at First Albany Capital cautions, investors need to exercise care in chasing these stocks. You are almost certainly aware that these companies are by and large startups and other very young companies. There are not a lot of profits being made yet by companies in this sector, but this is likely to change over time. One word of caution, there is potential for bubbling in this industry, much as was seen in the dot com field around the term of the century - bad news for investors and a basis for being cautious.

The advice of analysts and financial planners can be very helpful to you in making wise investments in the alternative energy sector. You should look for companies to invest in which have a real strategy to bring in revenue and stay away from the stocks representing companies which are long on technology and offer no revenue.

Juliet Davenport, Chief Executive of the UK alternative energy supplier Good Energy tells us that the outlook for the alternative energy industry looks bright. However, this is an industry which is at a crucial juncture; these companies need the continued support of governments, of customers and especially of investors to ensure their growth and the growth of alternative energy sources as a whole.
