Archery - The Complete Overview

by Burt Cross

Man, throughout history, has created devices that can help him survive. These include equipment that he used to kill for food and to protect himself. A very good example of such a an equipment is the bow and arrow. This weapon has since been used throughout history. But, since then, archery became used increasingly for recreation or sport, and less for for hunting.

According to studies the bow and arrow was used for hunting way back 5,000 years ago. Man slowly developed his skill in this sport, as he became more and more skilled at traditional archery. All through the Medieval Period, the traditional use of the bow and arrow had an important role in nearly all battles, wars and conflicts throughout the world.

Today, traditional archery is used not just for combat, but also for the purpose of sports and recreation. Still, almost all of the contests on archery make use of modern archery tools, so that traditional archery and its competitive form is gradually disappearing. Whilst traditional archery makes use of only the bow and arrow, modern archery is geared more towards the application of the latest, state of the art and advanced apparatus. This goes to show that modern archery is more accurate than the traditional form of archery.

These days, the bow and arrow is mostly used for hunting games, such as bow hunting. This game makes use the traditional form of archery, but it also makes use of new equipment. These include gloves, bracers (or arm guards), chest guard and similar equipment. These not only serve to provide a defense, but also to help the archer in shooting more precisely.

Even though traditional and modern archery have some dissimilarities in terms of the equipment used, they also have some commonalities. Evidently, the key similarity is the use of the bow and arrow. The basic principle for the two kids of archery is still the same - that is, to hit the target as close as you can. Nonetheless, contemporary archery equipment are more efficient.

Archery, be it traditional or modern, remains to be the oldest sport in the world. Even though from the start, it was applied as a weapon and not for the purpose of sports, it has evolved. Because of technical innovations, the sport has been enhanced tremendously. This proves that traditional archery will by no means vanish, but will just improve over time.
