Best Gas Mileage Cars - Not Just the Usual Suspects!

by Leona Allen

The best mileage cars aren’t necessarily the ones you might think of. Along with the Toyota Prius hybrid, are a few. We don’t think of as top fuel efficient vehicles.

Gas prices seem to be going up and up. The price of oil is still very unstable, which means gas prices are unstable. That also almost always means they will continue to rise.

The best gas mileage cars are invariably the newest models, and few of us are driving brand new vehicles. Buying a new car because it saves money on gas defeats the purpose.

The $21,100 Toyota Prius is the current top performer, with a Combined EPA estimate of 42 mpg. In addition to the Prius it Toyota’s Corolla, the Honda Civic hybrid, and the Mini Cooper. Surprisingly, the Toyota Altima is on the Top 10 list.

While many of the top gas mileage cars this year are ones that might come to mind right away, like the hybrid Toyota Prius, some aren’t so obvious.

The price for a barrel of oil probably isn’t going to settle down in the very near future. As a result, the price for a gallon of gas will probably remain pretty volatile, and continue going up. About the only upside is that we’ve had to learn to conserve energy.

Even though gas prices aren’t likely to drop in the near term, there are steps we can take now. If we can’t drive the best gas mileage car, we can make the care we do drive more efficient by keeping the tires inflated properly, making sure they’re aligned, and keeping our engines properly tuned.
