Leadership and management are best selling business literary topics all over the world. Leadership is normally linked into people (how people should be led) and Management into “things” like management routines, reporting, regular meetings etc.

There are many different ways to define leadership and management. perhaps the best definition for each have been created by Marcus Buckingham who is the leader of the strength based philosophy. In his book called “The one thing you need to know” he defines that[spin] management is changing people’s competence into the performance of the organization. Leader’s starting point is different. His task is to rally people into the better future. This could be interpreted in a way that a leader is able to create a vision (either by himself or together with other people) which is highly motivating for most of the people in the organization even in the bad times. According to these definitions large organization needs appropriate amount both leadership and management.

It is [spin]highly attractive thought that leadership does not necessarily require certain title or position. Anyone can be a leader. Naturally some positions require more leadership capabilities than others. But it sounds strange that one becomes a leader only through a position or a title on the business card. So anyone who wants, dares and have required capabilities can become a leader. A good personal coach may be helpful since a true leader has to reveal his true self to others even though some will not like him. But if he lets his light shine even in the difficult times he will have followers. Sounds almost poetry.

But is it possible to be BOTH good manager and leader at the same time? Let’s draw a quadrant and think about each category on its own.

BAD MANAGER AND BAD LEADER
everyone cannot be leader or manager and let’s accept it. The problem here occurs only if the person in the managerial position does not recognize his weaknesses and the others simultaneously expect sound leader or managerial skills from this person.

GOOD MANAGER AND BAD LEADER
Probably a person who performs quite OK in stable environment where there is not much competition. Is able to deliver reasonable results even year after year if there is no big need for change. Has often sound know-how of his own subject area. Runs into problems when the environment changes toward the one where old laws do not apply. Project manager is a good example of the role where good managerial skills are required.

BAD MANAGER AND GOOD LEADER
A good example could be a charismatic person who is not interested in keeping the papers in order but who has extremely clear and bright vision on his mind. He believes his own dream, is good to share responsibility and is able to make other people enthusiastic. If he recognizes his weaknesses in managerial skills he delegates quickly most managerial duties into others. Is at his best in the organizations where his light can shine without the burden of the bureaucracy.

GOOD MANAGER AND GOOD LEADER
Is it even possible to good in both areas? In the previous category we mentioned that good leader can also delegate his manager responsibilities to others as much as possible. It may be so that good leader should concentrate on leading people full-time. A good leader should avoid spending too much time on administration on his behalf whenever it is possible. Leading and inspiring people beats managing 5-0 measured in long-term business results . An exception could be for example a bad crisis where the leader must also manage in order to avoid larger catastrophe. Perhaps the person in this category is able to adapt his actions according to dominant situation. Different kind of leadership is required during economical upswing and downturn. A market leader should operate in different ways than a challenger, etc. Nevertheless, the person in this category must have good self-esteem and reflection skills. He also must know the difference between right and wrong and have ethical guidelines at least in his head. People do not end in to category by luck. Experience and reflection is required. The person in this category knows his strengths but is humble to grow and learn throughout his life.

7. Leaders of people treat their people with respect. Respect means you have a good opinion of their character or ideas. Simply put, you are interested in your people, their ideas, their complaints, their fears, their successes; THEM!

Example: your company carries a nutrition line created by Dr. Whoever. He specializes in human nutrition, and created an ingredient that is in your products that is truly unique. The leader will somehow get that doctor on a conference call with his or her group to raise their belief in the products.

11. A Multi Level Marketing leader always gives “back” more. Example: let’s say that there’s a foul-up in processing distributor agreements in your downline. You get the distributors on the phone with a customer service rep that handles the situation. You know that that customer service rep really worked hard to help the situation. Yes, it’s their job, BUT, the leader will send that customer service rep a bag of M&M’s or flowers or something to say “thank you for going above the call of duty.” What do you think that customer service rep will do for your group now? Just about anything.

12. The leader climbs the ladder and finds out who the decision makers are at the company, and gets to know them but never bugs them. This is positioning yourself so that opportunity can see you. This is different than you seeing opportunity. Suddenly you find yourself speaking at the convention…hmm, I guess it was just luck. Yeah, right!

13. At the company conventions, the Multi Level Marketing leader will introduce the corporate staff to their organization and vise versa. Even the order takers! Take the time to do this because it creates a sense of belonging for both the corporate staff as well as the distributors. Imagine the difference when a biochemist for a company has met 100 real people with dreams and passions about selling his/her product. Do you think that creates a stronger passion for the biochemist to create better products? Absolutely. All of this “belonging” and “passion” was created because of your Network Marketing leadership.

14. A leader in MLM is the switchboard of information and communication. They’re not “in the loop.” They ARE the loop.

15. A leader can always be reached by fax, email and/or phone. Returned communication will occur in less than 24 hours. If that’s not a possibility, the message will indicate that it might be longer.

16. A Network Marketing leader never exposes weakness and fear to their organization. Some view me as being “inhuman” or robotic on this. What I mean by this is that the leader must always maintain their certainty about both the business opportunity and the Network Marketing training system. I’ve never met a person in my life that doesn’t have fears and weaknesses. If you’ve got fears or doubts about your company, get over them or get out. Fly to the company today and get your concerns handled. Come back and be a rock for your group. I guarantee they’ll follow you. Conversely, share with them your little uncertainties and they’ll be so relieved that you’re “human”…and they’ll also find another Multi Level Marketing leader to follow.

17. Recognizing that everyone is growing, a leader never invalidates the efforts of anyone in his or her organization. One person brings six guests to a meeting, another brings two, and the third brings none. The Multi Level Marketing leader is able to notice that person number three is there, which might have been a major growth step for them. So instead of criticizing them for not bringing a guest, they praise them for being there.

18. The Multi Level Marketing leader is always searching for and praising something about his or her people. “Little babies love praise, but grown men will die for it.” Men in battle will risk their lives for a 1″x1″ ribbon they pin onto their shirt above their left chest pocket. They wear this ribbon for the world to see. Forgo praise and you’ve missed out on the most powerful tool in your leadership arsenal. Praise for things they’ve yet to do, and you’ll create a person who withdraws from the group because you made them a fake.

19. If you share this list with your group, share whose content it is. If you don’t, you will also be guilty of the last sentence of item #18: seeking praise, respect, fame, etc. for what you didn’t do; makes you feel like a fake.

20. A Network Marketing leader uses and teaches new technologies in their organization; but only if it truly works. Don’t drive your organization down dead ends.

21. Leaders are ethical examples. If you “sneak” your people past the registration table, you’ve just ruined their perception of you. They can never trust you and they shouldn’t. You’ve got one shot at doing this right.

22. A Multi Level Marketing leader creates alliances with needed national and international (if applicable) groups to ensure their group has support and representation. If no group exists, build it.

23. Leaders are more concerned about the growth of their people than the growth of their bonus check. Focus on the growth of your people; your bonus check will take care of itself.

24. A Network Marketing leader never says what they can get others to say. Example: my company calls and says, “We’d like you to speak at the company convention.” I accept graciously and then ask “Would it be possible for me to include a new leader named _________? 25. A leader never, ever speaks ill of anyone; even if they deserve it.

Know your audience. You must know your group members. Introduce new comers.

Select the topic. According to your group, you can select the subject . Try to maintain the continuity.

Prepare questions and possible answers for the passage. You must have possible answers ready in your mind. Use other resources like bible commentary, if you need to. Keeping notes is one of the most useful practice you can have, it can be helpful in future as well.

Adopt your own style. Don’t imitate anybody’s style, have your own style of leading.

Ask questions, if the group do not understand, rephrase the question, don’t try to explain everything.

Remember, you are bible study leader, not a preacher. Your goal is to let others talk and share!

Encourage the quiet one, their silence do not mean non-participation. Also, try to manage the dominant members.

If you don’t know the answer of any particular question, honestly admit it. Find the answers and share it next time. Remember, we are all here to learn.

Keep the eye contact. Don’t just concentrate on few members. Occasionally, ask questions to individual.

If the discussion goes side tracked by some question, bring the group back to the main idea. (Use your judgment, if there is an important issue, continue the discussion.)

Appreciate good answers . Everyone likes appreciation.

Be creative, visualize the picture in the passage. Use contemporary examples. Use maps, whiteboards, games, etc.

Don’t go overtime! 25-30 minutes of bible study is perfect. Sometimes, the faces of the members can tell you that its time to wrap up!!! If there is some important theological discussion going on, you can conclude bible study, but continue the discussion, so that those who need to leave can go.

Have conclusion in mind. Spend good amount of time in applying the word. Encourage your group.

Having a culture of leadership is an important element to success, at least if you want that success to be maintained over the long term in today’s Australian economy.

Time was that companies could look to a single great leader to inspire them, like some great rugby or football coach running a team of largely mediocre athletic talent so forcefully that he takes it to the heights of a champion. But those days are vanishing. Today business runs so fast, there is much data, there are so many new products and services and technologies to keep track of, that there cannot be only one leader most of the time. There needs to be a whole culture of leadership in the company, a culture that promotes and rewards anyone taking the helm when the time is right. Each single department within a company now needs at least one leader.

The dynamic and globally reaching economy of New South Wales demands the presence of this new ethos in business; a culture of leadership which works in tandem with the national economic strategies of the nation of Australia as it continues to go strong into the new century. The state of NSW says in its economic plans: “a strong economy allows us to provide the excellent services such as healthcare, education, and policing which the public expects…we are…innovative people who want a society built on fairness, equity, and collaboration…(a) society built on these principles will be more productive, wealthier, and fairer.”

This is also the way the 21st century company should be run.

STEP ONE: BUILDING TRUST AND A SHARED VISION

The top management at every company needs to make sure that each and every person within the organisation is on the same page if they are to proceed. All persons must agree on the same goals and objectives for the company. When everyone is working towards the same ends, then conflict within the organisation is minimised. People who feel that they are building something of value will naturally be motivated to maximise this success. This will bring out their natural talents for leadership, which is good for the company as a whole.

In a company with a shared vision, where everyone trusts each other and there is nothing to fear from conflicts of interest between individuals or departments, innovative business solutions are conceived and the calculated risks that can take a company to another level are taken.

Since people are so conditioned to always be in competition with one another in the business world, this can at first be a difficult thing to bring about. The top management must give people a push towards this goal by encouraging them to share their insights and feelings among their departments and perhaps even on a company wide level.

STEP TWO: EXPLORING THE POSSIBILITIES

People within the company must be brought around to a way of thinking which lets them take new and different possibilities into account. This is the way that top management thinks, but this view must be inculcated company wide. People have to be shown that it is OK to think outside the box and come up with truly new ways of doing things. One way to do this is to get people to sit down and think about some questions which pertain to them personally. These can include: “where do you see yourself in five years? In ten? How about your retirement party, what do you think will be said about you?” Questions about what are the positives - and the negatives of the company could be asked, along with questions dealing with how to handle unforeseen events are good ways to foster this sort of creative thinking.

Management should then sit down and look carefully at what people have said. This should be shared with team leaders and department heads and then on down to everyone, who can then think more about what has been learned through this exercise.

STEP THREE: ESTABLISHING AN ACTION PLAN

Now that employees are all on the same page and they and management know what possibilities to explore to make the company more prosperous, a sharply focused plan of action for the business that includes roles for everyone can be drawn up. Different groups and teams take on different goals that all get directed toward the same shared goals and vision, with top management acting as the guiding force.

Having a culture of leadership firmly in place will lead to greater productivity and profitability through the use of creative, forward looking thinking by everyone in the company.

Incidentally, it should be noted that those who are leaders in their industry or in their jobs are also leaders in their personal lives. It’s not a quality that you turn on and off. Leadership isn’t a job; it defines the person you are, who you are.

What qualities or attributes do leaders have? First of all, if you’re a leader, you have integrity. In fact, this is the most important quality you have to have. If people are going to follow you, they are going to be doing what you’re asking of them. You must be moral and ethical and follow through on what you’re saying if this is true. Integrity can be thought of as having the wherewithal to be able to tell your children or grandmother what you do and not be ashamed of it.

To be a leader, you also need to be consistent. You need to weigh your options, decide on which way you want to go, and then go. Don’t walk into your company one day and say that you’re going to do something to increase your company’s profile in the industry or bring in new customers and then the next week reverse direction and say that you need to cut the project budget and downgrade company technology. Establish a goal once you know what you want to do and then work towards that goal every day to achieve it.

You also need to know your business deeply in order to be successful leader. Educate yourself as you need to so that you know what you’re talking about. Of course, people like to deal with those who know what they’re talking about and can tell them what their company can do for them. This can’t be faked and is going to garner you disrespect if you don’t do it. I’m sure you’ve talked to someone who is a so-called “professional” and yet had no idea what he or she was talking about. This is going to hurt your business, so make sure you know what you’re doing.

You’re also going to make mistakes, and this is something everyone experiences. The key is not to necessarily avoid making mistakes in the first place (although prudence and being careful of course is important) but to own up to them when you do and then fix them. Admit mistakes and don’t try to hide them. You’ll lose respect if you do. It’s not true that you’re never going to be criticized, either. You are going to be criticized and have opinions thrown your way that you don’t necessarily agree with. Again, sometimes, these opinions and criticisms are going to be warranted, and you’re going to need to take them. Be able to listen to people and then make decisions. Listen to others, but make the final decision as the situation warrants. With a little bit of know-how, you can bring out your own leadership qualities already inside you and be on the path to true power in every area of your life.
