Why Healthcare Electives Abroad Are Beneficial
Healthcare elective abroads offer great opportunities to all medical students as they will finally put into practice all that they’ve been studying for nearly five years. Getting to know a different healthcare system in a country of the developing world, is a great opportunity to practice the basics of healthcare as it is unlikely you could practice that back home.
Dentistry, medical, nursing, physiotherapy or midwifery placements in a country with poor or basic healthcare infrastructure have a lot to offer to any student or professional as the working experience will be very valuable. Hospitals are almost always very busy because the number of healthcare staff and resources doesn’t suffice. Diagnosis most of the time is not based on technology but on individual judgment, and the care options are minimal given the absence of many, common in the West, drugs. Many times you will have to follow basic or old-fashioned healthcare treatments because of the shortage of resources.
Lois, a midwifery elective student, had the chance to gain invaluable work experience during her elective in Ghana. Knowing that maternity complications and infant mortality are much higher in Africa compared to Europe wasn’t enough compared to what she actually experienced in Ghana. What she came across were situations she could have never imagines such as women being forced to be silent while in labour which was taking place in public as privacy wasn’t a choice.
Lois soon found that despite the challenging conditions, midwifery knowledge and skills can be used anywhere. From day one she had the chance to participate in the delivery of babies which would have taken much longer back home. Though some were straightforward, many had complications like anaemia or pre-eclampsia.
For all healthcare students electives overseas is a unique opportunity to get to know different aspects of healthcare in different environments.
