Find Out More Information About Motor Scooters And Their Enthralling Past

Motor scooters are vehicles with small wheels and a low-powered gasoline engine geared to the rear wheel. The first patents for “foot powered” scooters were granted in 1921. Up to that time there were no motors attached to the scooter. They were driven by “foot power.” You can learn more at Vespa accessories.

The old-fashioned foot-powered push scooter was updated to a Razor motor scooter under the direction of Gino Tsai, whose father was a mechanical engineer for the J. D. Corporation in Shanghai, Taiwan. The design work for his scooter was completed after five years. Go to Italian scooters for more details.

When questioned on his motives for designing the product Gino Tsai said it was because his father had to walk long distances around a bicylce factory as he had very short legs. He wanted to put a stop to this and so invented the Razor motor scooter as a solution.

When Gino finished the development of his new scooter he began to market it to consumers. It very quickly became a desired product with people waiting as long as six months for their new product.

How can the popularity of the motor scooter be explained? The Razor scooter was made from lightweight airplane grade aluminum which can support over 1000 pounds without bending. It is foldable, which means it can be kept in a small area. It has small polyurethane wheels and a low-powered engine. Braking is done by stepping down on the rear fender.

Today there are many different brands and models of motor scooters. We have electric scooters and gas powered motor scooters. They are very versatile and functional, serving many different purposes. Compared to a motorbike they have smaller sized wheels, a less powerful engine and you can “step through” which is different from a motorcycle.

The most commonly seen style of scooter is the “folding,” or “foldable,” scooter. These are two-wheeled models that are typically used for traveling short distances around the city. Braking occurs when the back fender is stepped on, putting pressure on the back wheel and halting its movement. This type of motor scooter is designed for children or adults and can also be used to perform tricks on. It is very compact in size and can be folded for storage in small places.

A unique feature of freestyle folding motor scooters is the “kicktail,” a portion of the foot deck that extends over the back wheel. This is the feature that enables tricks to be performed. Motor scooters with “kicktails” are called freestyle scooters and usually have hand brakes due to the fact that the back fender allows for the performance of tricks instead of braking.

Electric scooters are generally bigger and heavier. Due to the greater weight they consume more power and can only go shorter distances when compared with the folding scooters. After about 10 or 15 miles it may be necessary to recharge the battery.

It is common to see an electric or battery powered scooter travelling relatively short distances such as around a town or other small journey. They are particularly popular among the elderly, handicapped and disabled. Instead of being confined at home these elderly or handicapped people can now have some of their former independence returned to them. Motor scooters of this type are usually referred to as mobility scooters.

Gas powered motorized scooters are usually more powerful and can attain higher speeds than the folding scooters or electric scooters. They can also travel longer distances when a larger fuel tank is provided. Gas scooters may not be permitted in some areas so it is wise to check out the laws and regulations in your area before purchasing a motor scooter. Check out used Vespa scooters for more informtion.

Great Touring Motorcycles

While touring on just about any motorcycle is entirely possible, getting the most pleasure out of the experience is the whole idea behind a great touring motorcycleSport bikes are famous for their fine handling attributes, as well as having an abundance of power to get you from point A to point B in the fastest time possible, but rider comfort on a long distance trip leaves a lot to be desired. Don’t even think about a long trip on one of these two up or you’re more than likely going to have a very disappointed partner.

Cruisers are built for ,well cruising. Even for a long trip they offer a fair degree of comfort. Some even have decent passenger accommodations, but they’re not built for all out touring so they are usually lacking in the handling department. It can be quite tiring trying to muscle a cruiser down long winding roads that go on forever. The seating position on cruisers isn’t ideal for long distance travel either
Touring on a motorcycle is all about comfort and enjoyment. Bikes specifically built for this purpose do it very well.

Good wind and rain protection is a must have for someone heading out on a cross country tour on a motorcycle. Touring bikes are designed with fairings and windshields to protect you from whatever elements Mother Nature may through at you on your travels.

A comfortable saddle and good seating position is another one of the things I consider a necessity for a long distance touring motorcycle. It’s not much fun being on a 2000 mile trip with an aching back and a sore butt.

Storage compartments are another item that is needed on a great touring motorcycle. If you’re going on a long distance trip, you need a place to secure the things you plan on taking with you. As such, most purpose built touring motorcycles have saddlebags. Some of them even have detachable bags that you can remove and carry with you. There are a few touring motorcycles that are factory equipped with a trunk to add more storage space for your gear. I have found the trunk on our Honda Goldwing GL 1800 to be very useful for keeping our helmets in while sight seeing.

Sport touring motorcycles offer those that enjoy aggressive riding more of a sport bike feel with the comfort of a tour bike. Although they are a little heavier than their sport bike counterparts, they usually have fairly impressive riding and handling characteristics.

When most people think of touring motorcycles The Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide and the Honda Goldwing are probably the first two bikes to enter their mind.

Rightfully so, These 2 pieces of American Iron represent the ultimate in touring class motorcycles.
Decked out with just about everything you could possibly want on a motorcycle, these bikes are designed from the ground up to get you across country in complete luxury.

Many are not aware that the Honda Gold Wing has been produces in their Marysville, Ohio plant since 1981 and may get a little upset about my calling it American Iron..Sadly, Honda has decided to move production of the Gold Wing back to Japan for 2010.

Next in line for sweet touring motorcycles are the Super Sport Touring bikes. Most of the big manufacturers have at least one of these in their lineup these days. They have managed to capture a large part of the sport bike market segment from the “starting to hit middle age” sport bike riders. Looking for the excitement they are used to from an all out sport bike, but wanting a lot more comfort for an all day riding adventure.

While no one bike can do everything great, knowing how you are intending to use the motorcycle most of the time will help you choose a bike that will best suit your needs.

Days before the competition itself, riders must take fluid, especially water, consistently in order to achieve and maintain a steady hydration level prior to the main event.

Bikes Deal: How To Get The Best Deal When You Buy A Bike In The UK

In the UK, bikers agree “no one in their right mind would pay list price on a new or secondhand bike.” The advertised price is the beginning of a negotiation, since it may be the seller’s maximum-profit point, but it might not be the buyer’s best deal. So how can you get the best deal on a new or secondhand bike, if you’re planning to buy in the UK? Well, your first task is—hard though this may be to hear—to do your homework. No, not your math homework, your motorcycle homework! Read the classified ads in the local paper go out on the Internet and surf for local dealers, and don’t neglect to ask your friends about deal that they’ve gotten on their bikes.

Now that you’ve done your homework, schedule your exams carefully. The best day to drive the seller’s price is going to be the last day or two of the month. This is the window when most of the people who work in bike sales have a little bit more room for negotiation so that they can hit their dealership’s sales targets. Have you got extra time to maneuver? If that’s the case, wait until winter when the market’s slowest, and you’ll get the best deal on your new bike. When you go into the showroom to negotiate for your bike, start off with the right line. Ask, “What’s the best you can offer me?” and you’ll find that the conversation just flows from there.

Don’t be intimidated by the sales staff; on the contrary, they’re there to help you, and you’re certainly there to help them do their job. Once you’ve started off with the right question, remember that you’ll pay not only the price on which you agree, but that there are hidden costs as well. If you rode your own bike to the showroom, well, you’ll want a good price on it. And if you’re planning to sign on for financing, then keep in mind that the interest rate you pay on the loan will work out as part of the purchase price as well. Sales staff will likely make more money if you buy with a finance plan; so keep that in mind, and you might even be able to use this information to your advantage.

Don’t forget that English law frees the dealer of any obligation to report that the bike’s been damaged in shipping or on the showroom floor, unless you ask directly, so make sure you ask the question—even if it seems unnecessary. Also keep in mind that, for the first six months after your purchase, new consumer legislation requires the dealer to prove that any flaw that develops or becomes apparent in the bike isn’t their fault—even if it’s a used bike, regardless of any warranties. So, check out your current consumer rights before you shop and keep an eye on consumer legislation even after you make a major purchase.

Motorcycle Fundraiser Rides

During these tough economic times, not only are individuals suffering, but so are charities which rely on donor generosity. Even more so, it is the institutions behind the charities which are having a hard time with their incomes dwindling. So they have had to come up with unconventional ways to continue fund raising. One of the ways has been to go to the motorcycle and biker community.

It may strike some people as odd, but the biker community is surprisingly generous. There is a true sense of brotherhood among bikers and they are willing to show support for causes they believe in. This has not been lost on some of the top charities in the country and they have started their own motorcycle charity motorcycle charity rides.

The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) is one such foundation to rely on financial support of the motorcycle community. Most of the money raised for the PBTF comes from their motorcycle charity are, the Ride for Kids®.

When the PBTF was created in 1991, the diagnosis of a brain tumor was virtually a death sentence for a child. Because there was very little research being done into the disease, most treatments were ineffective or harsh, and most children did not survive to adulthood.

The PBTF has worked hard to change that reality. Researchers are developing new therapies that extend the lives of children, and they believe that their work will ultimately lead to a cure for this most devastating of childhood cancers. They rely on the members of their distinguished Scientific Advisory Board to help them evaluate the best funding opportunities in the brain tumor arena.

As the world’s largest non-governmental source of funding for childhood brain tumor research, they’re dedicated to not only eradicating this disease, but to providing support to families. Their educational resources deliver comfort and hope to families in need of information, and their college scholarship program gives brain tumor survivors a boost for the future.

The Ride for Kids® is held in 39 cities across the United States. Approximately 25,000 riders per year participate in their biker charity biker charity rides.

The motorcycling community’s generous support enabled the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) to increase its medical research funding commitments by $8.35 million in 2008. The majority of the funding came from the Ride for Kids® program, now in its 26th year of championing childhood brain tumor research.

The grants consist of an additional $6 million to the PBTF Institute at Duke University; $1 million to the PBTF Institute at the University of California San Francisco and $1 million to PBTF Institute at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada; $250,000 to Dr. Gregory Shackleford at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles; and $100,000 to Dr. Yuri Tabori at the Hospital for Sick Children.

The PBTF’s research institute program concluded its sixth year of funding in 2008. Overall, the foundation has funded more than 50 research institutions in the United States and other countries.

How To Make Your Old Motorbike Keep Going

It really does not make a difference if you have a pristine or used motorcycle there are numerous things you ought to do to make your bike last longer, be safer and get a lot more riding hours.

If you hold a shinny new motorbike, you have to to take safety measures. You need to break the motorcycle in; this means that you should not rev the bike to high as you ride it for a particular period.

As a rule people when they get a new or custom motorcycle they have a propensity to pamper and baby their new toy, checking the oil and tire pressure regularly, making sure to be a consequence with all of the scheduled factory service contract maintenance.

You can always tell a brand new motorcycle owner. They are the ones that when you go on a trip together, each time you stop they are right out there with their buffing cloth just polishing away.

But, just like any novel plaything, the novelty wears off and often times the pre ride checks and the maintenance does as well. This can ad unnecessary wear and tear on your bike and is just down right dangerous.

Even though even new tires and parts can have a fault and produce a safety hazard primarily this is not the case. It is a safety reality that a well-maintained motorcycle is far more dependable and safe to ride then a neglected one.

Here are a few straightforward checks you can do to significantly improve the life of your bike and ad hours of safe riding to your favorite past time, motorbike riding.

To start with, even though this might sound cliché, at all times do a pre-ride safety check. It merely takes a couple of minutes and it will boost the life of your motorcycle and keep you safe.

Check the tires & wheels:
You must always check the tires for signs of wear down. Motorbike tires come with a part of the tire called a wear away bar. This is a part of the tread that when the tire wears down far enough will begin to show even with the rest of the tread. If the tread on your tire is flush with the wear bar, it is time to acquire new tires.

You must constantly test the tire pressure. Having appropriately, inflated tires help out in handling and stopping and will significantly increase the existence of your tire. Additionally, have a look at the wheels to make certain there is no dents or cracks that could cause you to have a blow out whiles your out on the road.

Examin the cables and the controls:
Check the clutch and the throttle lead for signs of wear and for play. Make certain that they are not frayed plus that they travel smoothly and do not constrain. If your clutch feels like it takes to long to connect you can fiddle with it. Then again if you have fine-tunedtweaked it as far as it can be tweaked, then its time for a new clutch. Operate the front brake and see if the bike can move, if you don’t’ possess any adjustment on your front brake it is either awfully low on brake fluid or its time to contemplate about brakes. Do the equivalent with the foot brake, yet again if your motorcycle can move its’ time for brakes. (If you bike rolls as applying either the front or back brake, Please don’t get on it until you get the brakes repaired…)

Check your head light and turn signals:
Turn your key on and actually walk to to the front of your bike and see if your headlight is working. Now days for the most part motorcycle headlights come on when you twist the key on. Naturally, if you are riding an older bike then you will need to turn the head light on before inspecting it. Try out both low and high beams. Next, turn on the right turn indicator and see if both the front and rear signals are working. Carry out the same for the left turn signal. It only makes sinces that if any of these lights are not working. Switch the bulbs before going away for your jaunt. At the same time as you are examing your lights, you should just as well beep the horn just to make certain it is still in working order.

Ensure the Oil and fluid levels:
In fear of stating the obvious, verify the gas. Many motorcycles today come with fuel injection and do not contain much of a reserve. Some bikes though, still come with a carburetor and have a fuel regulator that can be to openup to a cache in you gas tank.

If you gas light comes on or you opened the emergency supply the last time you rode, you need to get to the gas station pronto. If your tank runs dry as a bone, you are going to have to push or abandon you motorbike by the edge of the road while you go to get gas. You ought to verify your oil level before ever starting your motorcycle. In most cases, the measuring stick has an upper and a lower mark on it. Your oil should be somewere close to the center of these to marks when your motorcycle is cold. Running your motorbike low on oil can cause your bike to run hot and cause excessive motor ware and very serious destruction to your motor. Even if your brake safety check was a success you must continually bear in mind to check your break fluid level because even though the brakes perform okay if the fluid is low they could fail when they get hot.

Try out the suspension and chassis:
Prior to you are all set to go, test out your front and rear shocks. Don’t simply sit on your motorbike and jump a couple of times to find out if they work. Look close up at the front and the back shocks. Check to see if there is any leakage or additional oil draining from them. What’s more, check the seals to see if they are dry or broken. Check the rear suspension to see if the weight adjustment is suited for your weight. Now sit down on the motorcycle and rotate the handlebars to see if everything feels proper also that there is on play in the front end. The very last thing to check is your break and shift linkage. As soon as everything checks out, you can ride safely.

One remaining bit of counsel though, ride safe!

Trike Motorcycle Safety

The month of May is upon on us and with the longer days and warmer temperatures come more opportunities to ride your bikes or trikes. Most of us a pretty good at watching out for ouselves but we know the folks in the 4-wheel vehicles are not always on the look out for us. For this reason May has been named Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

The point of this safety campaign is to get the folks driving the automobiles and SUV’s to pay a little extra attention and to watch out for those riding their bikes and trikes. Emphasis will be placed throughout the month on things like reminding drivers that motorcycles are smaller than most vehicles so they are a little easier to overlook. Pay extra attention when driving to look for motorcycles and trikes. Be sure when checking their side mirrors when driving to watch in their blind spot for bikers. It really doesn’t matter if you are on a big Vintage Harley Davidson or a little Yamaha XT folks are looking for cars and trucks when they are driving and not motorcycles. So we all have to be aware and drive defensively. In addition wear your safety gear when riding.

Here are a few additional safety tips for folks to be aware of when riding your Harley Davidson Trike:

For the Automobile Driver

• Remember the motorcycle is a vehicle with all of the rights and privileges of any other motor vehicle on the roadway. Always allow a motorcyclist the full lane width — never try to share a lane

• Always make a visual check for motorcycles by checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic and at intersections

• Always signal your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic

• Don’t be fooled by a flashing turn signal on a mo?torcycle — motorcycle signals are often not self-canceling and riders sometimes forget to turn them off. Wait to be sure the motorcycle is going to turn before you proceed

• Allow more following distance, three or four sec?onds, when behind a motorcycle, so the motorcyclist has enough time to maneuver or stop in an emer?gency. And don’t tailgate. In dry conditions, motorcycles can stop more quickly than cars.

For the Bikers

• Avoid riding in poor weather conditions

• Wearing brightly colored protective gear and a DOT-compliant helmet

• Using turn signals for every turn or lane change, even if the rider thinks no one will see it

• Combining hand and turn signals to draw more attention to themselves

• Using reflective tape and stickers

• Positioning themselves in the lane where they will be most visible to other drivers

So be safe as we get the 2009 riding season under way!
