Windows 7 Version Tips Pro’s & Con’s
Like many of you I have been waiting for some thing to replace Vista. I have been running windows 7 beta since it was available. But like all Microsoft products there are things to love and things to dislike. I personally don’t like the look and feel of windows 7 operating system. To me mimicking the look and feel of a MAC is a mistake. I guess if I wanted a MAC I would buy one. That said here is a list of my Pro’s and Con’s for Windows 7 to date. Some of these may go away with version 7100 is finally RC.
Pros:
Faster than Vista or XP – But I still love XP Quicker boot time – Whats not to love Connecting to the internet is much easier – This great for non geeks, I guess Takes less disk space than Vista – Who can complain about that Superbar is better than the older style taskbar.
Native support for SSD’s Media player 12 and media center visualizations play in FULL screen - The best thing by quicklaunch is gone – I struggle with this one, this will be a Con to many people More secure (Obviously) – at least for a little while Aero peek is very useful – my personal favorite No more WMP toolbar, it’s included in the thumbnail.
Hidden icons on the taskbar open up into a bubble instead of across the taskbar UAC is easier to tune Hand writing recognition supports - math expressions, etc. – Sorry I am an engineer Device management for printers and cameras Desktop peek is very useful compatible with Vista drivers (Good for legacy devices) Lower system requirements than Vista Quicker installs A lot of junk programs like movie maker and Outlook are gone
Cons:
No option to let your battery run out completely, giving us with laptops more battery “memory” issues. I would have thought they would have fixed this after Vista Hibernate and Standby – Well what can I say, hmm it stinks Superfetch – Is not so super No more small Icons for the task bar Quick launch tool bar – again this is a Pro for some Microsoft made it Remote Differential Compression makes file transfers take forever and is on by default WLM should still have an icon in the tray.
No classic view for the control panel. Some legacy drivers don’t work Did I mention Microsoft made it?
Summary:
Even though I am a XP Pro fan and a die hard gamer there comes a time to let go and move on. There is a lot to like about windows 7 but for many of us clinging to and old version of mechwarrior or some other outdated software it’s hard to let go of the past. If you have not tried software version of windows 7 you might as well wait for 7701 RC. Like all beta software it works great with the latest hardware but you may experience issue with some older drivers.
