Tariff calculations are performed in the following way:

• Tariff processing is triggered by an event coming in to Convergent Billing to be rated, or by the billing process processing customers and services.

The application environment of a tariff specifies whether it is a rating tariff or a billing tariff.

• The tariffs that could possibly be applied to the event are selected, as follows:

? All global tariffs and tariffs with the appropriate application environment (rating or billing) and context are selected for processing.

? The list of tariffs is reduced by selecting only the tariffs associated with the product related to the event (via the service number).

? The list is further reduced by selecting the highest priority tariffs of the same type, application environment, and context.

• Eligibility criteria expressions defined in the remaining list of possible tariffs determine if a tariff is eligible.

• For each eligible tariff, condition expressions calculate values used in a tariff table look-up (if one was defined).

• Charges returned from the tariff table look-up are used in a charge expression to calculate the value of the tariff.

Facility Groups

Facility groups in Convergent Billing represent the service options for a product. For example, a mobile phone product might offer call waiting, call forwarding and call diversion as service options.

In Convergent Billing, individual service options are referred to as facilities. Facilities can be offered individually or in combination with others, but must be offered as part of a package. This package is called a facility group. A facility group must contain at least one facility and only facility groups can be added to a product definition. Facilities cannot be added to a product directly.

In addition to facilities, a facility group can include one or more compatible facility groups, that is, facility groups that can be used in conjunction with (configured with) the current facility group.

Defining a facility group requires careful consideration of what facilities should be included, as incorrect grouping can prove too inflexible for customer requirements (for example, defining a facility group that includes both Call Waiting and Call Diversion). When this option is offered, the customer has the choice of either accepting the whole facility group (both facilities) or rejecting the facility group (neither facility). The solution in this case is to define two facility groups, each containing a single facility.

Updating Facility Groups

A facility group can be updated or modified at any time, but the impact of making these changes should be considered. For example, modifying the list of compatible facility groups associated with a facility group does not impact the rating of products with the facility group. However, adding to or removing from a facility group could have a big impact on the rating of a product.
