How Arrows Are Made
The arrow plays a very vital role in archery. Used along with the bow, it should be made up of proper materials, and also be properly designed, using the finest materials available to you. Your archery equipment should be such that when you shoot an arrow, the target should not be missed due to the air pressure. And, just like the bow, the arrow is only as good as the archer’s stance. If the proper stance is not achieved or maintained, the archer’s success rate falls considerably.
Arrow Shaft: the primary portion of the arrow, having a nock (for mounting onto the bow string), fletching (feathers used for balance, stability, and maintaining direction as well as manipulating speed), and an arrow point or arrow head, (the front portion designed to pierce or penetrate the target).
The shaft was originally made of wood products, but is now also made of carbon, aluminum and/or composites like fiberglass. While selecting any material for the shaft, the weight of the material and the strength should be given great importance. At present, arrow shafts made of carbon alloys are popular and are being widely used by archers everywhere. In fact, arrows used in popular sports events like the Olympics are made of carbon alloys. Each material has its own advantages or disadvantages. For example, arrows made up of fiberglass can more easily break that those constructed of carbon alloys. Consider also the shaft’s spine (spine refers to the shaft’s stiffness). The shaft should not be too flexible; it should be straight and easy to handle.
The nock for mounting the bow is at the rear or opposite end of the arrow head. It can either be shaped from the wood to fit around the bow string, or made of a composite material, and mounted at the end of the shaft. The nock keeps the arrow shaft stable while pulling back on the bow string and while aiming.
Fletching, as mentioned above, refers to the feathers mounted into the shaft, just above the nock. They provide a drag once the arrow is in flight, and help to keep the arrow shaft flying in the intended direction, while adding stability and balance. The feathers are either real, or manufactured from plastic or other materials.
The arrowhead or point, obviously located at the front end of the shaft, was previously made by cutting the end of the shaft into a sharp point. Modern arrowheads are actually mounted onto the shaft, and can be made of stone, metals, animal bones, or other hard materials. The material is dependent upon the purpose of the arrowhead, and the arrow-head may also be one of several point types. Point types range from the multi-faceted blades to the blunted points used for shooting safely during target practice or with younger archers.
