Yes, if you are new to guitar and piano you can actually ditch your expensive music course and experiment with iLife! Yep! To all fellow Malaysians: Apple had announced the local availability of software suite iLife ‘o9, which includes upgrades to iPhoto ‘09, iMovie ‘09 and GarageBand. I believe previous iLife users would welcome this latest upgrade ffrom the Big Apple!

The new ACE to iPhoto ‘09 is the ability to browse your photo collection by both fACEs and plACEs. Faces, a new novel way to organise your favourite photso in iPhoto ‘09, which automatically scans photo using the latest face detection methods to identify specific persons in a picture and then assign a name to them. Here comes the fun part, from there you’ll be able to search for photos by a person’s name or through the new Faces View. That sounds fun right? Alternatively, the new feature can be used to create smart photo albums of groups of people such as family or friends easily in just a few seconds.

Another new feature in iPhoto ‘09 is Places, which automatically imports photo location data from a GPS-enabled camera to compile your photos by location into a map. Yes the catch is you need a GPS-enabled camera! Once iPhoto ‘09 knows where each photo is snapped, you can effortlessly explore your recent trip to, say Malacca, using an interactive map. Don’t have a camera with geotaging capabilities? No problem (but you need to work a little bit) as you manually assign location information to any photo, group of photos or event.

If you are a camwhore who like to share your suggestive photos online on Facebook or Flikr, iPhoto ‘09 allows you gratify your lust: you can publish photos, includes assigned names and even retrieves name tags added on Facebook back to iPhoto ‘09. That’s good right? For all the I-Like-Myself fans! Get your iLife!

But if you are an aspring movie director or producer: aka more into video editing, iMovie ‘09 brings to your table a new Precision Editor feature that allows users to skim and click on a magnified filmstrip to view clips up close and even finetune them such as using sound from one clip with other video clip. Sounds like a great mix and macth tool huh!

Besides that you can also get the new addition to iMovie ’09’s video stabilisation feature that helps smoothen and reduce camera shake in clips added to your project. So no more grainy pictures and videos! Other additions to iMovie ‘09 include new titles, transition effects, speed changes and animated travel maps ala the Indiana Jones films to add that professional touch to your movies. Meaning you can be the next Indiana franchise director!

Here comes what most of us fancy-Apple’s popular music editing software, GarageBand ‘09 now comes with pre-recorded instrument lessons that teach budding musicians how to play the piano and guitar. The lessons include some basic ones to learn the fundamentals at your own pace. GarageBand ‘09 also includes new guitar amp and stomp-box effects. Who says you need a teacher if you want to learn?

iLife is available now at RM299 for a single user license and RM379 for a family pack through the Apple Store that allows the software to be installed up to 5 computers. Users who have purchased a new Mac system from an Apple authorised reseller after January 6 can upgrade to iLife ‘09 for a minimal fee of RM39 to have the software shipped over.
