Poker Terms For Texas Holdem

Poker lingo can be very confusing. Just like computer talk, if you don’t know it, you don’t get it. This is a second helping of poker terms to help you know what you hearing.

Big Slick- Big slick is the nickname for AK (both suited or not suited). AK is one of the strongest starting hands for Texas holdem.

Top Pair- When your hand pairs the high card on the board. With a Qd-10d-3s board you have As-Qh. You have flopped top pair.

Blank- A blank is a card on the turn or river that seems to have little affect on the hands. For example, on an As Js 10cl board, the 4h is a blank. The 4s would not be as a flush is now possible.

One Gap Hands- A one gap hand is one that the two cards are one number apart. K-J or 4-6 are one gap hands. Many players like to play these hands, especially if they are suited.

Pot Limit- Pot limit poker is a little different than no limit. In pot limit you can only bet the amount in the pot.

Priced In- In tournaments especially you will get some unusual situations where you will call with weak hands. This will happen when a short stack goes all-in. You are in the big blind with a nice sized stack. The pot has 2,000 chips and you need to put 350 in to call the all-in. Here you are priced in and should always call, with any two cards.

Rake- In most cash games, a rake is taken from the pot as a house fee for running the game. Some games require that there is a flop is seen before any rake is taken from the pot.

River- the river is the last card dealt on the board. Many exciting hands are won or lost on the river. The river is also called 5th street.

Turn- The turn is the next card dealt after the flop. It is also referred to as 4th street.

Satellite- A satellite is a tournament that qualifies you for a bigger event. Many players use this to try to play events that they can’t afford to enter for the full price.

Short Stack- A short stack is a player with a small amount of chips compared to the other players. If you had $100, and everyone else has $800, you are a short stack.

Splash The Pot- Splashing the pot is when you wildly throw your chips into the pot. Often it will be hard to determine the bet when this is done.

Set- A set is when you make three of a kind from your pocket pair. If you have 66 and the flop is 629, you have flopped a set.
